Corresponding Locket

Installation and Performance

1995

Corresponding Locket was a performance of primping. In this performance I methodically plucked out underarm hairs with tweezers, alternating from the left to right. I then placed the hairs into corresponding handmade envelopes. The entire time I was counting, for there was a specific amount of hair for each envelope. When I reached the end I had sealed the envelopes with gold (for the left) and silver (for the right) sealing wax, and plucked one pubic hair for each seal. Although this was a four-hour performance, I felt more like a slow moving object within an installation.
